Q: How much time is a Host volunteer expected to give?
A: Volunteers and newcomers who are matched by the Host Program should be prepared to spend a few hours together each week, for a period of 4 months to a year. Your local Host Program can tell you their particular requirements. Individuals or families in the match make their own plans to get together at mutually convenient times.

Most Host Programs also have volunteer opportunities that require a smaller time commitment.

Q: How much money does it cost to be in the Host Program?
A: Newcomers and volunteers pay nothing to participate in the Host Program. Volunteers do not give or loan money to the newcomers they are matched with.

Q: Will the Host Program reimburse me for expenses related to match activities?
A: Volunteers and newcomers are each expected to pay their own way for activities they do together. Your Host Program can suggest many no-cost and low-cost options.

Q: Are refugees eligible to participate in Host?
A: Refugees who are permanent residents are eligible. Refugee claimants whose claims to refugee status have not yet been recognized are not eligible.

Q: Does the Host Program replace other settlement services for newcomers?

A: No. The client-volunteer match does not take the place of the professional services of a Settlement Worker. Taking part in Host does not affect eligibility for other programs.

Q: Can a match last longer than the time commitment required by the Host Program?
A: Sometimes individuals and families involved in a Host Program match wish to remain friends. That is ideal! However after their initial commitment ends, they become regular friends. Many Host Program agencies have waiting lists of clients waiting to be matched. Trained, experienced volunteers who are willing to take part in another match are highly valued.

Q: I came to Canada as an immigrant. Can I be Host volunteer?
A: Yes! Many immigrants, including former Host clients, are volunteers. They go through the same application and training process as all other potential Host volunteers.
